Since 1997 the archaeological site of Herculaneum excavations is inserted, together with the ruins of Pompeii, in the list of world heritage sites by UNESCO drafted. At the time of the eruption of Vesuvius, unlike Pompeii, which was buried by a rain of ash and lapilli, Herculaneum was overwhelmed by a flood of mud and volcanic debris.
